At KHB Publishing, an author’s aspirations and hopes are our utmost priority.
Founded by author Kim Harvey Brannan, our company is keenly aware that publishing a book is hard to do alone. Our founder knows, because she did it. And it was tough—very tough. Kim’s process took much more energy, time and money than she ever imagined. Nothing felt instinctive. She had to learn the hard way, how to get the services she needed, how to find and hire the countless skilled professionals needed, and how to approach and manage the production process. When friends asked her “Was it hard to write a book?” Her answer is always, “Actually, writing my book was easy. However, publishing my book was extremely difficult.”
Taking a manuscript and working with it, to transform it into a book that is released to the market, involves many stages and steps. Each author needs skilled editors to evaluate their written content from both a developmental and conceptual perspective; keen proofreaders are required to ensure accuracy and adherence to acceptable standards of grammar, syntax, punctuation, proper tense and point-of-view; talented artists are a must-have to plan, design and execute a high-quality, striking cover artwork and to craft appropriate interior layouts to maximize the reader experience.
In addition, there are many ancillary services needed to reinforce and strengthen the launch of a new book, including development of an author website and social media platforms. Industry insiders are needed to establish distribution channels to enable books to get onto shelves in bookstores. Each of these critical steps are necessary to ensure the successful birth of a new book.
Industry standards warn first-time authors that seeking a book deal with a traditional, big publishing house takes an average length of time of three years. That average timeframe begins only after a publisher accepts a manuscript. Often, it takes many attempts to reach out to multiple publishers before one’s manuscript is accepted. Even the brilliantly successful author J.K. Rowling was rejected 17 times by traditional publishing houses until she was finally accepted by Scholastic Books who believed in her manuscript which ultimately became the astronomically successful Harry Potter book series.
KHB Publishing understands first-time authors, as well as those who have had to handle everything on their own with their first book who simply long to use their time more effectively to write future books…and leave the publishing to us.
